TROOP 660
SUMMER HIGH ADVENTURE
The Upper Potomac
June 24 - 30

The original plan had us leaving Thursday June 24 at noon from the church and driving to Spring Gap MD where we would camp overnight in a hiker/biker campsite on the C&O Canal Trail.  The canoes would be delivered and our cars taken to Hancock MD where the river part of the adventure would end.   Since the river was running low, we started about 10 miles down river at Paw Paw in a deeper part.  [If this was what "deeper" meant, we would have waded the whole 10 miles upstream.]  The next morning, after we learned how to keep canoes pointed downstream, we began a 4-day (3-night) cruise down the river, swimming and fishing along the way and staying at hiker-biker campsites overnight.  On our fifth day (June 29) we hiked to a cave and explored it.  We returned home Wednesday June 30 about 2:00 pm.  See below for detailed agenda.

Scouts were charged $120 and adults $60 which covered transportation, canoe rental, meals, and camping fees but not other possible expenses such as fishing licenses or eating at a restaurant.

Itinerary

June 24 Met at church and packed gear (Photo 1).  Will it all fit (Photo 2)?  Posed for group picture (Photo 3) and left shortly after noon.
Stopped in at Pathfinder's to finalize rental and get directions.
Arrived Paw Paw  (Route 51 bridge) ~4 pm (mile 156.8*)
Set up camp in nice grassy park with water and latrines.
June 25 Launched canoes (Photo 4).
Conducted lessons in canoe handling and safety.
Paddled to Sorrel Ridge (mile 154.1*,  ~6 miles on water).  One adult was always trailing canoe (Photo 5).  Some more experienced scouts had opportunity to paddle solo (Photo 6).
Exhausted from dragging canoes over numerous shallow ripples (Photo 7).
Explored Paw Paw tunnel.  Swimming (Photo 8) and fishing.  Hot and muggy.
June 26 Paddled to Fifteen Mile Creek @ Little Orleans (mile 140.9* - ~13.2 miles on water).
Very muddy landing (Photo 9, dirt bank on far side of creek).  Nice grocery store.
Swimming.  Hot and muggy.
June 27 Paddled to Cacapon Junction (mile 133.6*,  ~7.3 miles on water).
Worked on canoeing merit badge in a relatively deep section of river at lunch time (Photo 10).
One scout picked up by parent across river (Photo 11).  Left marker for posterity.
Fishing, swimming (Photo 12).  Hot and muggy.  Dinner was always a good time of the day (Photo 13).
June 28 Packed canoes one last time (Photo 14).
Lead canoe had to work to keep in front (Photo 15).
Paddled to Pathfinders @ Hancock (mile 124.0* - 9.6 miles on water)
Total on water = ~31.4 miles
A little lapse in canoe communication.  A bit of rain.
Dropped off canoes and retrieved cars.
Rental agency complimented scouts on taking good care of canoes.
Swam in city pool.  Great.
Drove to Ft. Frederick.
Set up camp.  Hot and muggy.
June 29 Drove to dam 4.
Hiked to cave 1.5 miles (Photo 16), explored cave, hiked back to dam 4 (Photo 17); the scouts were not left behind, honest!
Two adults who didn't consult map biked 10 miles to dam 4 that turned out to be 32 miles.  Flat tire disaster averted with fresh spare tube.
Drove back to Ft. Frederick.
Swam in Hancock city pool.
June 30 Struck camp and headed home about 10 am, but not before touring fort (Photo 18).  Group photo taken to prove we all survived (Photo 19).
Arrived @ church around 2 pm.
Lucky we went when we did; subsequent weeks had no rain and were even hotter.
*Mile markers along the C&O Canal Trail.  Distances are generally
the same for the river except as noted.
