Instructions
  1. Brown ground beef, onions and pepperoni and/or sausage in skillet or on griddle.   Drain off grease.
  2. In a large pot, combine tomato sauce, water and spice packet (garlic salt, basil and oregano) in large pot.  Bring to a boil.
  3. Add browned meats and onions to the large pot. Reduce heat and simmer.
  4. In another large pot, cook macaroni per instructions on the package.  Drain off the water and add to the meat sauce.
  5. Stir occasionally and gently (to avoid breaking up the macaroni), until thoroughly heated.
  6. Add olives, mushrooms and or peppers.
  7. Add the shredded mozzarella cheese.
  8. Serve when the cheese has melted.
Comments
  1. This is a great cold weather meal;  but you need to avoid having too much in a large pot during frigid weather.  If need be, use two medium pots.
  2. Browning of meat and onions can be done in the first pot and the tomato sauce, water and spices can be added and the mixture brought to a boil.  This does require careful draining of the grease after browning.
  3. It is difficult to find the tomato sauce with tomato bits.  Just substitute 28 oz can of tomato sauce and an 8 oz can of canned tomatoes.
  4. This menu comes from a Dutch oven recipe that I prefer.  The differences with that are per the following:
    • Do not include the pepperoni in the browning of the ground beef; if sausage is uncooked, it must be included in the browning.
    • Mix the browned meat, tomato sauce, water and spice per above instructions.
    • Cook macaroni and place the cooked macaroni into the bottom of a skillet or pie pan, like a pie crust.  For the portions in menu, it will take two skillets and Dutch ovens.
    • Cover the cooked macaroni with the cooked meat, onion and sauce mixture.
    • Sprinkle on the mozzarella cheese and then add pepperoni, olives, mushrooms, etc. on top of mixture.
    • Bake in a pre-heated Dutch oven until the cheese has melted.
